Genocide No More – Save Darfur will sponsor a singalong in the Sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church of Redding on Friday, Jan. 8, at 6:30 p.m. featuring the music of “Mary Poppins,” the timeless Walt Disney production starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke.
Genocide No More – Save Darfur was formed three years ago in Redding to increase awareness about the genocide in Darfur and to raise funds for humanitarian relief for those displaced by the actions of the Sudanese government and its Janjaweed mercenaries. Sponsoring groups include the First United Methodist Church, Temple Beth Israel, First Christian Church: Disciples of Christ, Pilgrim Congregational Church: United Church of Christ, St. Joseph’s Church, Our Lady of Mercy Church, Sisters of Mercy, and the Enterprise High School STAND (Students Taking Action Now Darfur) Club.
“Mary Poppins” has been loved by millions of children and adults for years. It features such songs as “Chim Chim Cheree,” “A Spoonful of Sugar,” and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocius.” Money raised will help provide a library/classroom in Camp Kounoungo and provide hope for the thousands of children in the camps. It will also be used to alleviate hunger and suffering in camps for the displaced in Darfur. The ousting of non-governmental agencies in March by the Khartoum regime has dramatically increased the plight of the Darfuris in these camps.
