Laughs, Limbaugh and More

The world can always use more laughs, and we’ve been missing a few in Northern California since comedians/political satirists Liz Merry and Aaron Standish took a “burnout” break a couple of years ago.

We got a missive from the Merry Standish duo the other day that says they’re gearing up to perform again. In the meantime, they’re doing more funny stuff online, including a fake news page called The Merry Standish Standard. The motto for the Standard: “It’s pretty low.”

Funny stuff. I’m bookmarking it.

  • Rush Limbaugh can’t even get a vacation right. The 58-year-old talk-radio giant suffered chest pains on a golf course during his holiday vacation in Hawaii, and was rushed to a hospital, where he’s reportedly “resting comfortably.” We wish him a long, restful, quiet recovery. Full story here.
  • Every time the so-called experts pronounce the written word dead, science proves them wrong. The latest is a study that shows that, thanks to the Internet, the amount of reading in Americans’ everyday lives tripled between 1980 and 2008. Full story here.
  • Mark Your Calendars for next Tuesday, when musician Charles Ii leads a jam session for “Musical Tuesdays @ the Library.” The FREE fun begins at 6 p.m. in the Redding Library’s community room. For more info, call 245-7264.
  • A federal appeals court has ruled that a California police officer can be held liable for using a Taser on an unarmed person. The ruling, if it stands, could mean restrictions on the use of Tasers by police. The Los Angeles Times has more here.
  • Rules for Successful Living #5: Never look down the barrel to see if the gun is loaded.
