San Diego singer-songwriter Jakob Martin stopped into the Vintage Wine Bar and Restaurant (1790 Market St.) a night early and said he’d rather kill a day in Redding than Sacramento. At 8 p.m. tonight (Dec. 4), Martin plays for the sixth time at the Vintage, a room where he continues to draw a good crowd.

Martin has been busy recording new tunes for an upcoming album.
“In the past, we’ve tried to make something that’s commercially viable, but now I’m working on something that’s real beautiful and soulful,” said Martin, adding that he’s favoring rawness over perfection.
There’s no cover on this show (a good stop after “The Cascade Christmas,” if you’re going tonight).

Jason Schroeder and Mark McAbee of Clear Cut perform from 6:30 to 9:30 tonight at Vintner’s Custom Cellar (1700 California St.). These two have built a strong following in the north state and I recently wrote about Schroeder’s incredible guitars (and also James Russell) in a story in Enjoy magazine. Check out the story online here . Schroeder’s guitars have been features recently in Vintage Guitar and Premier Guitar magazines.
Schroeder and McAbee perform originals and covers in the style of the Counting Crows, Train, Dave Matthews and others. Click here to check out their MySpace site.

It’s also the downtown Christmas tree lighting tonight at 7 p.m. as part of Winterfest 2009. The event typically draws good numbers of folks downtown, so it’s good that there are some places for them to spin around and do things after they’re down there.

Artist Tiger Michaels and his wife Susie will be the “guest” celebrity bar tenders starting at 5:30 p.m. at Maritime Seafood & Grill (1600 California St.), where 12 of his paintings are also being displayed.
Performing from 7 to 11 p.m. will be jazz vocalist Stephanie Foos. Foos will likely be performing with Bernie Baker or Bruce Calin (or both). She’s a bright young talent that some of the established jazz veterans in town are truly excited about.

On Saturday night, Alison Scull and Victor Martin perform at the Vintage Wine Bar, and the Lake Tahoe-based touring band Blue Turtle Seduction is scheduled to perform with songwriter Matt Miller at the Downtown Eatery and Libations (1344 Market St.).
