Music in the Pines

Mark your calendars for next weekend, Nov. 20-22, when Shasta College hosts a couple of musical events at the college theatre — and the price is right!

Tickets are only $3 at two Shasta College Community Band performances, and the Shasta Youth Symphony’s fall concert is FREE.

The Community Band, 110 members strong, will perform marches, Broadway tunes and music from movie soundtracks at 7:30 p.m. concerts on Nov. 20 and 21. Fun for the whole family, and nearly all of the $3 ticket price goes to buy more music for the band.

The Youth Symphony will perform at 3:15 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 22. The concert will include selections from Debussy, Ravel and Bach. Several students will perform solos as well.

  • Next weekend is also when the Mercy Medical Center Guild holds its annual Christmas Tree Fantasy event. The hospital’s volunteers host a variety of fundraising events at the Redding Holiday Inn on Nov. 20-22. For details, click here.
  • As the rainy season arrives, it’s a good time to remind folks to be very careful about eating wild mushrooms. Even veteran mushroom hunters can sometimes be fooled by deadly imitators. Three members of a Lodi family have been hospitalized in San Francisco after eating “death cap” mushrooms. Their story here.
  • The Huffington Post has an interesting essay about the publishing industry and bookselling. That bestseller price war between Wal-Mart, Amazon and Target could be the ruin of books. Click here.
