Palo Cedro resident Merle Haggard will play a Jan. 4 concert at the Cascade Theatre in Redding to benefit the Northern California Veterans Home. Haggard, a Country Music and Grammy Hall of Fame Member, is waving his fee and donating all proceeds to the project, the theater announced late Wednesday.

The concert announcement comes at the same time as a story breaking about Haggard and his wife Theresa suing their former business manager, CPB Business Management Inc., for underestimating the couple’s taxes. A story in today’s Record Searchlight reports that the Haggards recently paid $639,697 for late filing penalties. The suit claims that Robert Brown of CPB failed to file any state and federal tax returns for the Haggards from 2004 to 2007.

As for the Cascade benefit concert, tickets go on sale Friday (Nov. 13) and can be purchased online at www.cascadetheatre.org or by phone at 243-8877. Tickets are a relative bargain for a Haggard show in a small setting at $35-$45.

Cascade Theatre members and Q97 Country Club members may purchase tickets starting today until midnight.

Today’s newspaper story didn’t mention anything about the concert, but it’s interesting to note that shortly after paying so much in penalty taxes, an announcement comes about Haggard doing a benefit show. It’s probably a case of coincidental timing, but I assume Haggard will probably need to play some non-benefit shows in the upcoming months.

Here’s more breaking news on a couple levels. The downtown Redding coffee shop formerly known as Breaking New Grounds will once again be called that as new owner Lisa Langston has recently taken over the business.

Langston opened as Breaking New Grounds on Nov. 4 after getting the blessing from former owner Bill Grubbs. The business, located at 1320 Yuba St. (right off Pine street), had recently been operating as the Village Grind.

Langston said she’ll be moving the shop back to more of a coffeehouse feel with more bakery goods, quiches, etc. The new Breaking New Grounds is open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and features free wireless Internet.

I’ve been there twice recently and enjoyed fresh brewed iced tea, a latte and a pair of delicious jalapeno bagels.
