Halloween In The Olde Country

transylvaniaSome little known Halloween Phacts:

The holiday may have its roots in the ancient Roman, Feast of Pomona. I lived in Pomona and it’s a pretty frightening place, so I buy into this particular theory.

The tradition of wearing scary masks and costumes on Halloween is based on an old Celtic (no, not John Havlicek) custom of donning disguises in order to make one unrecognizable to harmful spirits. Today, it is often used to deceive creditors and ex-wives.

“Trick-or-Treating” is based on the old-fashioned custom of “begging.” That’s why beggars traditionally have had such bad teeth. All that candy and no dental plan.

The colors orange and black have long been associated with Halloween. And the San Francisco Giants. The Giants have arranged to never play in the month of October in honor of the  Hallowe’en holiday.

This year’s most popular costume is projected to be a “Right-Wing Terrorist.” Wally Herger has rented out the contents of his closet and raised enough money that he can now pick up the check when he and Glenn Beck go out for milkshakes.

Have yourself a merry little Halloween.

Phil Fountain

Phil Fountain is a pseudonym for ANC’s prodigal cartoonist, Philbert Phountain, who has recently returned from a working hiatus where he served as the lead fact-checker for George Santos. He lives in Shasta County with his long-suffering wife, Christine, as well as a variety of layabouts and urchins who claim to be his progeny … including three grandchildren. He busies himself with his crayons and obsessing over the fate of his favorite baseball team while a small dog sleeps under his desk. He’s actually not such a bad guy as evidenced by the fact the dog rarely bites him anymore. Look for his crudely rendered drawings in future posts on A News Café.
