Got your Halloween costume picked out yet? Does it include a poncho?
Long-range forecasts call for rain in the Redding area on Oct. 31, which would be too damned bad because Halloween falls on a Saturday this year. Conditions could change between now and then. Keep your fingers crossed.
In the meantime, Northern California will enjoy beautiful fall weather. Highs will be in the 80s through the weekend, then we’ll see a cooling trend through next week, with partly cloudy skies and temps in the low 70s. A new weather system is expected to move into the area on Oct. 31, giving us a 60 percent chance of rain that day. We need the precipitation, but still . . .
Haunted houses and corn mazes have already cranked up for Halloween, and more events are planned around Shasta County. Put your favorite Halloween activity (with admission info and/or link) in the Comments section below. Thanks!
- It’s not a Halloween event per se, but costumes will be welcome and it is indoors: A Day of Literacy and Play at the Redding Library will include games, snacks and FREE children’s books. The Oct. 31 event, which runs from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., is hosted by KIXE-TV’s Ready to Learn program and a host of local sponsors. For details, click here.
- At Shasta College, they’re planning to celebrate the Day of the Dead on Oct. 30, and the public is invited. From 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., events outside the 800 building will include music, face-painting, poetry readings, food and dance by Anderson Teen Ballet Folklorico. For more info, call Ann Sittig at 242-2243.
- Sports: OK, I take back every negative thing I’ve ever said about baseball. I watched Thursday night’s playoff game between the Yankees and the Angels and that finish had even Mr. Who Cares on the edge of his seat. One-run game, bases loaded, full count. Pitcher Brian Fuentes looking for all the world like a man standing in front of a firing squad. Nick Swisher at bat. Anything will score the tying run: A bunt, a line drive, a broken-bat dribbler up the middle. The pitch, the swing and crack! — he pops out. Game over. Angels win, 7-6. The series goes back to New York. Guess I’ll watch the next game, now that my heart rate is back to normal.
- Mark Your Calendars for Sunday, Nov. 8, when Pacific Sun Olive Oil in Gerber hosts an open house. From 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., visitors can pick olives, watch the milling process and sample olive oil. Activities include wine-tastings, music, hayrides and guided tours. Details here.
- So long to Soupy Sales, who died Thursday at age 83. One of my earliest TV memories is laughing at Soupy getting hit with those cream pies. Obituary here.
- Seen on Facebook: In an ad, Woodstock’s Pizza in Chico offers discounts through its “Frequent Woody” card. It’s a college town; how do they keep from going broke?
