NVCSS 2nd Home opened in February 2008 and has served over 800 mentally ill adults who participate in groups, activities and eductation workshops, representing over 12,000 visits.  2nd Home is a collaboration between NVCSS, the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill and consumers that provides social integration and mental health recovery to community members with a variety of mental illnesses, including bipolar disorder, major depression and schizophrenia.

What does that mean? Adults go back to work after treatment for anger and depression, previously isolated community members volunteer, meet in groups and make jewelry as part of jewelry design groups, adults who have never sewn are designing and creating shopping bags and clothing, and former hobbyists are transformed into award-winning artists.

Art is a common thread among NVCSS grouos and clients, as a way to communicate, express feelings, eliminate differences, be productive community members and gain self-fulfillment. “Without the support of the community, we would not be able to offer activities, including art,” says Connie Murray, Clinical Program Manager.  “2nd Home funds the art program through the sale of items produced by our participants and supporters.”
