It’s 2:30 p.m. right now and only 70 degrees outside in Redding. Time for a parka or something.
I went mountain biking on Saturday and it was 108. So, really, how good does this fall weather feel today?
Out of the main spike of heat, people tend to plan more events for cooler October in the north state. It doesn’t look like this October is any exception.
Here are some events that look like they could light a candle in my jack-o’-lantern. I’ll dig into some of these in more detail later, but for now, here’s an overview:
Houston Jones
• Houston Jones at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 1 at the Stage Door Cabaret and Coffeehouse in Mount Shasta. I’ve not seen this group live, but have heard so many good reports on them (including at an Oaksongs concert). I like what I’ve heard on recordings.
• Clevie B Jazz Trio at 7 p.m. Oct. 2 at Maritime Seafood and Grill in Redding. Good local jazz keyboardist with some of my favorite people in the rhythm section — Steve Huff (bass) and Tony Armsdon (drums).
• "Walk This Way" at 11 a.m. Oct. 3 at Turtle Bay Exploration Park. The Dance Project is performing (always worth a trip) at the Paul Bunyon Amphitheater. Call 242-3180 or visit www.healthyshasta.org .
• West Coast Monster Truck Nationals Oct. 2-4 at the Tehama District Fair Grounds in Red Bluff. I believe I’ll skip this event again (I’ve never been to a monster truck show), but I do want to try out the loud, primal, bombastic advertising voice in print: "FRIDAY, SATURDAY, SUNDAY! WEST COAST MONSTER TRUCK NATIONALS IN RED BLUFF. BE THERE!!!!"
Pink Martini
• Pink Martini at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Cascade Theatre . In a recent introduction at the Cascade, Jefferson Public Radio’s Valerie Ing Miller gushed her excitement about this show. Survey says: She’s right! This should be a terrific one.
• 10th annual Big Bike Weekend , Oct. 9-11 at the Redding Convention Center. Motorcycles as art — worth a look-see if you have even a passing interest in bikes.
Megan Lynch and Bill Evans
• Bill Evans and Megan Lynch at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10 at the Stage Door in Mount Shasta. Former Redding resident Megan Lynch is so cool and such a great fiddle player. Bill Evans is a stellar bluegrass picker. Their recent album "Let’s Do Something" is excellent.
• Joan Osborne, the Holmes Brothers and Paul Thorn on Oct. 16 at the Cascade. I just think this is a can’t-miss concert. Should be a super soulful evening of music.
• The Shasta Band at 7 p.m. Oct. 17 at the French Gulch Hotel. I’m gonna call them a legendary north state band. Perfect venue for them. Visit www.shastaband.com.
• Fourth annual Silent Film Festival Oct. 23-24 at Old City Hall in Redding. It features live piano accompaniment and films presented by one of the leading preservationists of silent film, David Shepard. click here from more info.
Bearfoot
• Bearfoot on Oct. 24 at Bernie’s Guitar in Redding. Young bluegrass group from Alaska kicks off the Oaksong Society’s Winter Concert Series. Visit www.oaksongs.com .

Well, there’s a little bit of it. Tell me what you’re going to see in October.
