Here’s the report I heard from Thursday night’s solo acoustic show by Rob Wynia at Bombay’s in Redding:
First, who’s Rob Wynia? Wynia is the guitar player/lead singer of the Eugene, Ore., metal band, Floater. Despite being a purely independent hard rock band (never signed to a major label), Floater has amassed a large grass-roots following and regularly sells out show at big venues up and down the West Coast.
Also (and I’ve never seen Floater, but they’re scheduled to play at the North Star Brewery on Oct. 17), Floater is known to have some rowdy fans — perhaps a slightly aggressive crowd.
But back to the report (keeping in mind that Wynia was playing solo acoustic). Apparently, Wynia got socked in the face with a large, wet ball of paper towel that someone fired from the audience right at the start of his set. Slightly angry, he got past the incident and continued to play.
But before long, a huge brawl broke out in the audience before him. Several people were then ejected.
Wynia apparently found a dark corner to retreat to during the fight.
I’m sure this is a rocker who’s used to some rowdy nights with Floater, but while doing a singer-songwriter set? Wow.
If anyone else witnessed this evening, I’d love to hear more about it.
