Burgers to Die For

The Brewers and the Greenbergs had a great time as guest hosts Wednesday at Maritime Seafood & Grill’s new Burger Night. Host Unni Song required almost no work from us while feeding us big, juicy hamburgers with a variety of toppings and terrific sweet potato fries.

Since we were guest hosts, burgers on the night’s menu were named for us and included ingredients suggested by Doni. I had a Brewer’s Burger with ale mustard, grilled onions, cole slaw, pickles and barbecue sauce. Lord a’mighty, but that’s some good eating.

At one point in the evening, I nearly had people convinced that Kobe beef came from little cows no bigger than Airedales, but Kelly called me out for the bullspitter that I am.

Maritime and anewscafe.com party together again on Friday when our own Jim Dyar and the ArtHop guys — Troy Hawkins and Adam Mankoski — are guest bartenders. Their signature drink is a blend of amaretto, champagne and apricot brandy called “A Roll in the Hay.” Plus, they’re planning a raffle. The fun starts at 7 p.m.

  • Health officials say a horse in southern Shasta County has tested positive for the West Nile Virus. The horse recovered, but health officials urge all horse owners to get their animals vaccinated against the disease. So far this year, West Nile has also been confirmed in six dead birds and two live-mosquito samples in Shasta County. Take precautions against mosquito bites when spending time outdoors.
  • To celebrate three years in business, Vintner’s Cellar in downtown Redding will host a Grape Stomp Competition on Saturday, starting at 1 p.m. Sixteen teams will stomp 500 pounds of grapes to see who can produce the most juice. • Talk Like An Egyptian: Fourteen students from Egypt will talk about life in their home country and their experiences here at a special cultural event on Sept. 23 at Shasta College.
