Ouch! That’ll Leave a Mark

Did you see the news about a giant hole being found in the swirling clouds of Jupiter? Something the size of the Earth apparently crashed into the giant planet in recent days, leaving a hole in its clouds and an upwelling of bright particles spotted by an amateur astronomer on Monday.

Experts say it likely was a comet or a piece of space ice that left the mark on the planet. Something difficult for astronomers to spot before the collision.

The Australian who found the impact mark, Anthony Wesley, said he’s glad the huge planet is in our solar system: “If anything like that had hit the Earth it would have been curtains for us, so we can feel very happy that Jupiter is doing its vacuum-cleaner job and hoovering up all these large pieces before they come for us.”

Yipes. Thanks, Jupiter!

  • Today’s Quote is a great one from Ronald Reagan: Recession is when your neighbor loses his job. Depression is when you lose yours.” To which I would add: Schizophrenia is when you can’t tell the difference.
  • Facebook Fun: I’ve written before how I wish Life had a “Hide” function like on Facebook, where you can put annoying “friends” out of view without them knowing it and being insulted. I noticed yesterday, as I ran my cursor over the page, that you can’t “Hide” your own posts. I mentioned to Kelly, “You can’t Hide from yourself on Facebook.” She said, “You can run your mouth, but you can’t Hide.” Har.
  • Swine Flu: Shasta County health officials are reminding people to practice good hygiene and help prevent the spread of the Novel Influenza virus. Fourteen residents have been treated for swine flu in the county so far.
  • MarketFest: It’s not too early to start hydrating for Thursday evening’s MarketFest. I’ll be in the Shasta County Arts Council booth there this week, talking up the local Writers Forum group, so stop by and say howdy. Music this week will be provided by the eight-piece Chicago funk band Bumpus.
