Hip, Hot and Happenin’

If there’s any doubt that Redding has become a happenin’ town, check out this weekend. There are so many things going on, it’s impossible to attend them all.

Tonight, I’m going to MarketFest to see singer Sharrie Williams, and it ought to be a great show. Doni Greenberg’s “Cooking at the Cascade” movie/food event is on Friday. Jim Dyar outlines some Saturday activities here. And there’s plenty more in A News Cafe’s new Day & Night section.

I’m especially looking forward to the ArtHop Birthday Bash on Saturday afternoon. Live music, food, vendor booths, artist demonstrations. Plus cupcakes! Who could ask for anything more? The bash begins at 3 p.m. in Library Park and runs until 6 p.m., when ArtHop events crank up at venues all over town.

Wowsers. On Sunday, I may need to sleep all day.

  • Did you see where Amazon.com has dropped the price on its Kindle 2 e-reader? After saying a few months ago that the $359 price would not change, Amazon announced yesterday that the price was cut to $299. Still more than I’m ready to pay. Guess I’m stuck with regular old books for now.
  • The Small Business Development Center operated by Shasta College and College of Siskiyous has opened a new business assistance and consulting office in Yreka. Ribbon-cutting is planned for Aug. 12 at the office, which is at 212 Butte St.
  • Employee of the month at Mercy Medical Center is Kathryn “Bitsy” Troncale, a 17-year veteran at Mercy. She works in Peri-Operative Services, getting patients ready for surgery and caring for them in the recovery room. Congrats!
  • A kernel of truth: Popcorn is an equal-opportunity food. It finds a way to get between each and every tooth in your mouth, no exceptions. They should sell dental floss at movie theaters.
  • Headline of the Day: Britons Say They’ve Made Human Sperm. Insert (as it were) your own punchline.
