The Redding Library is a happening spot this summer, with events for adults, teens and kids every week. It’s not too late to sign up for the Summer Reading programs, which include prize drawings, special programs and art displays. To find out more about Summer Reading and other library events, click here. Here are some of the upcoming events:

• On Tuesday, at 6 p.m., Tim Holt will play an all-ages show of American folk songs in the Children’s Garden.

• At 1 p.m. Wednesday, Banjo Bill and Darlin’ Clementine will present a program for the kids called “Go West, Young Man!” The performance will be a mix of music and amusing characters from the Old West and the Gold Rush.

• The library has been showing free Harry Potter movies at 1 p.m. on Saturdays, and the series wraps up on July 11. On July 14 at 4 p.m., magician Brian Gilles will entertain at a Harry Potter Party in the community room.

• One for the teens: On July 12, at 2 p.m., Adam Deem and illustrator Ryan Lamb discuss their book, “Saving Li’l Smokey,” about the bear cub that was rescued from a North State forest fire.

• On July 15 at 5:30 p.m., the Friends of the Shasta County Library will screen one of the great comedies of all time, “Adam’s Rib,” starring Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn.

Wow. What a lineup.

  • For the seventh time in eight years, a member of the Redding Police Department has been honored by the California Peace Officers Association with its “Award of Law Enforcement Professional Achievement.” This year’s honoree is Capt. Paul Grooms, who has worked at RPD since 1989 and who is currently Division Commander of Investigations. Congrats!
  • Headline of the Day: From the FOX News website: Sarah Palin Outsmarts the Left. Peter Ferrara writes that, by resigning two years before her term is up, the Alaska governor can spend more time in the Lower 48 and we can all get to know her better and understand that liberals have painted a “false caricature” of her. His full opinion piece is here. Boy, I feel so outsmarted.
  • Movies We’ve Seen: “Public Enemies” with Johnny Depp as bank robber John Dillinger and Christian Bale as the FBI agent pursuing him. Stylish direction by Michael “Miami Vice” Mann, cool vintage cars, lots of shooting with Tommy guns, high body count.
  • DVD I Watched on the Dreadmill: “The Caller,” a quiet little 2008 film starring Frank Langella as a corporate whistleblower who hires a private eye (Elliott Gould) to tail him because he fears he’s being set up for murder.
