Corner Booth: Traffic Tech

The California Department of Transportation’s District 2 is going high-tech with a couple of new programs.

Caltrans will begin using Twitter to alert motorists to delays related to safety improvement projects this summer at Buckhorn Summit between Redding and Weaverville.  Followers can get the Twitter messages via e-mail or on their cell phones. To sign up, click here, then click on the Twitter link.

At the Dana-to-Downtown construction project on Highway 44 in Redding, Caltrans will test a traffic monitoring system in the work zone. Experimental equipment will monitor speed and alert the Caltrans Traffic Management Center when traffic slows to 35 mph or less. Traffic managers then can activate changeable messages on portable signs at several locations, warning motorists about congestion and giving them the chance to change their routes.

The test starts Saturday and runs through July 13.

  • How to Live Forever: Go to bed with indigestion and a bad mood, then toss and turn all night long. It won’t really be forever, but it’ll seem like it.
  • Sports: The National Basketball Association draft is tonight, and Northern California residents can only hope that the woeful Sacramento Kings pick up some players that will help. The Kings have four of the first 31 draft choices. The biggest NBA news comes from reports that the Phoenix Suns are trading Shaquille O’Neal to the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs need another scoring threat to take the defensive pressure off LeBron James, but can 37-year-old Shaq really be the answer?
  • Fun With Craigslist: In the “barter” section of the Redding Craigslist ads, we find this: have nice tanning bed want horse. We can only assume that this ad was placed by Lady Godiva.
