Here’s an untrumpeted venue for jazz in Redding: The “Twilight on the Terrace” program at the Turtle Bay Cafe.
Every Friday and Saturday night through August, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., the cafe offers local jazz acts with the beautiful Sundial Bridge as a backdrop. It’s free, as long as you order food or drink; $10 cover if you tie up a table and don’t order anything.
I looked all over the local newspaper and the Internet, but could find no listings for upcoming acts at the cafe. I called over there (242-3181) and found out that Mumblefinger performs tonight and jazz veteran Frank DeSilva plays on Saturday. I asked the cafe to start listing their acts on the free Events Calendar at ANewsCafe.
- Speaking of Turtle Bay, the Farmers Market there begins this Sunday and runs through Sept. 27. The Sunday market runs from 8:30 a.m. until noon. The Redding Certified Farmers Market next to City Hall continues on Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. until noon.
- The Shasta Regional Community Foundation has awarded 47 scholarships totaling $182,100 to students in Butte, Lassen, Placer, Shasta, Siskiyou, Tehama and Trinity counties. Congrats to all the recipients!
- What I’m Reading: Just finished “The Scarecrow,” the latest thriller from Michael Connelly. In this one, the reporter and FBI agent who teamed up in Connelly’s earlier book “The Poet” are back, tracking a serial killer who uses computer expertise to hunt his victims. So creepy, it’ll make you scared to log onto the Internet. Now reading “Moscow Rules,” a spy novel by Daniel Silva.
- Sports Update: Unbelievable! The Orlando Magic blew a big lead to let the Lakers win Game 4 of the NBA Finals in overtime, mostly because Dwight Howard can’t hit free throws. It’s “Hack-a-Shaq” all over again. The Lakers now lead the series 3-1, and likely will wrap it up on Sunday in Orlando.
