Corner Booth: Hoppin’ Saturday

Saturday is the second Saturday of the month, which means it’s time for ArtHop!

Redding’s popular monthly event kicks off at 5 p.m. with music by Majical at the Carter House Gallery in Caldwell Park. From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., merchants all over town will host artists and their work.

A few of the events: Dance by Marie Littlewolf at Posh Mama Boutique on Market Street, five artists displaying their work together at GMS Mann Custom Jewelers in Churn Creek Plaza, and a retrospective by artist Cissi Lundgren at Old City Hall.

  • Lots of other stuff going on Saturday as well. If you’re interested in local writers, check out the Writers Forum meeting at 10:30 a.m. at the Redding Library’s community room. Members will read five-minute samples of their work. (I’ll be there, reading from my work-in-progress, “Lost Vegas.”)
  • Also on Saturday, the city of Redding will host its 9th annual Energy Fair from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at Turtle Bay Exploration Park. More than 50 vendors will display energy-efficient products and technologies, including a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle that runs off solar energy, at the free event.
  • Sports: The Orlando Magic pulled one out last night at home, 108-104, and now trail 2-1 in the NBA Finals behind the Los Angeles Lakers. Can they do it again Thursday night? Meanwhile, the Stanley Cup goes to a seventh game as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Detroit Red Wings, 2-1. Game 7 starts at 5 p.m. on Friday.
  • I complained recently in this space about businesses that expose waiting customers to blaring TVs or piped-in music, but this week came the topper: While waiting in a surgeon’s office, I heard Rod Stewart singing “The First Cut is the Deepest.”
