Corner Booth: Round ’em Up

It’s Rodeo Week in Redding, with events scheduled for every day through May 16.

The big Kickoff Barbecue and Dance starts at 6 p.m. Saturday at the rodeo grounds. New York steak with all the trimmings, and music by The Billies, all for $18 a head. Tickets available at the Convention Center box office.

The just-for-fun bank holdup and annual hunt for the Lone Stranger comes on Tuesday. Next Wednesday, there’s a Chili Cookoff and street dance. The actual bronc-busting, steer-wrestling and calf-roping events are May 14-16. The rodeo parade starts at 10 a.m. May 16.

The Asphalt Cowboys, who sponsor many of the events, have a complete rundown on their calendar. Click here.  To see the Redding Rodeo Association’s calendar, click here.

  • Another big event this Saturday, this one at the Shasta Outlets mall in Anderson. The Anderson Garden Club will have its semi-annual plant sale in front of Mary’s Pizza Shack from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Friends of the Anderson Library will have a book sale at the same location.
  • Nadya Suleman, the infamous Octomom whose recent delivery of octuplets brought her total number of children to 14, is to undergo surgery this weekend that will make future births all but impossible. RadarOnline reports that she has benign fibroid tumors that require surgery. Her kids will be in the care of nannies during the week it’s expected to take to recover from the surgery. Full story here.
  • When I worked at a newspaper, the worst days were those when something was wrong with the crossword puzzle. Every time, we’d get hundreds of angry callers, upset because their daily ritual had been ruined. Bet the phones are ringing down at the local paper today.
