Corner Booth: Calling All Teens

Teen-agers in Redding (and in every town smaller than, say, New York) often complain that there’s nothing to do, but not this Saturday. Along with all the other events on a very busy calendar (hello, Frugalista Flea Market!), add Youthfest ’09.

Live music, free refreshments and information booths will be offered from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday at Library Park. Staged by a number of youth-oriented groups, Youthfest will deliver info about teen health and wellness, volunteerism and teen activities in the community. Teen-agers who participate at the interactive booths will be registered for prize giveaways.

  • The Small Business Development Center at Shasta College is reaching out to young people, too, with its Young Entrepeneur Program (YEP). A YEP Business Fair and Competition is slated for 5:30 p.m. May 12 at the Holiday Inn in Redding. Contestants will deliver “elevator pitches” for their business concepts and the audience will vote on the presentations via cell phone. Winner gets $1,000. To get more info on the competition and all the YEP programs, click here.
  • Another fun Saturday event: The Shasta Damboree in the City of Shasta Lake. The all-day celebration includes a pancake breakfast, a parade, live music and fireworks. For details, click here.
  • Reason #172 to avoid Florida: A woman gets a call from her neighbor, who says, “Don’t go outside. There’s an 11-foot-long alligator on your doorstep.” The gator, which weighed more than 400 pounds, was removed by animal control officials. Full story (with yikes-worthy photo) here.
  • What I’m Reading: “The 6 Messiahs” by Mark Frost. Years ago, Frost, one of the creators of the “Twin Peaks” TV series, wrote a very entertaining book called “The List of 7,” which starred a young Arthur Conan Doyle and a “real-life” detective who inspired Doyle’s creation of Sherlock Holmes. Those characters return in “The 6 Messiahs,” which pits them against thieves who are after the world’s most sacred books. Tons of fun.
