Corner Booth: Good Causes

A Redding couple is putting a new twist on garage sales: The proceeds from the weekend sale will go to the North State Symphony.

Jeanne and Dennis Szody will offer all kinds of neat stuff — computer gear, clothing, toys, small appliances, even a small boat — at the sale, which runs 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at 3530 Greenstone Place, which is off Foothill near The Knolls.

  • People who need their vascular systems screened for potential problems, such as plaque or aneurysm risk, are in luck. Mercy Medical Center has scheduled a full day of screenings on Saturday, May 2, and the cost is only $99. Each hour-long screening includes three different medical exams and a consultation with a vascular specialist.  Pre-registration required. For registration materials and more info, call 246-3729 or click here.
  • Don’t forget to tune in to KIXE-TV at 7 p.m. this Friday and Saturday for the public television station’s annual art and wine auction. Artworks include hand-blown glass pieces from Orient & Flume in Chico, as well as paintings, ceramics and photos. For more information, click here.
  • Mark your calendars for the State of Downtown event at the Cascade Theatre on Thursday, April 30. The free event begins with a reception at 5 p.m. and a program of awards and performances that begins at 6 p.m. Sponsored by Viva Downtown and the Downtown Redding Business Association.
  • Movie I Watched on the Dreadmill: “Disturbia,” starring Shia LaBeouf and David Morse. A modern take on the Hitchcock classic “Rear Window,” this film centers on a teen who’s under house arrest with one of those electronic anklets. With time on his hands, he spies on the neighbors, including one who may be a serial killer. Yipes.
