Corner Booth: Take the Plunge

Now that the economy has (perhaps) bottomed out, maybe you’re thinking about starting your own business.

Next Wednesday, starting at 5:30 p.m., the Small Business Development Center at Shasta College offers a workshop on developing a business plan, finding financing and overcoming obstacles. The workshop, led by Keli Anthis, costs $10 and seating is limited. To register or get more information, click here.

  • My Boston Celtics fell to Chicago 105-103 in overtime in the first game of the NBA playoffs. The Celts could’ve won or tied it, but Ray Allen’s shot at the buzzer missed. Allen missed most of his shots, in fact, and I’m not the only Celtics fan worried that he’ll pull a vanishing act as he did through much of last year’s championship playoffs. Bulls rookie guard Derrick Rose is a player to watch. He scored 36 points and had 11 assists. Wow.
  • What I’m Reading: The basketball playoffs take up most of my time this weekend, but I am reading an intriguing novel called “By A Slow River” by Philippe Claudel. The story centers on a murder case in a French village during World War I.
  • DVD I Watched on the Dreadmill: “Kansas City Confidential,” a rough-and-tumble crime movie from 1952 starring John Payne and Preston Foster.  Though the movie opens with a bank robbery in Kansas City, most of the action takes place in a Mexican resort where the robbers meet to split up the take. Best part of this movie is watching early performances by three familiar Hollywood baddies: Lee Van Cleef, Jack Elam and Neville Brand. Great stuff.
