Corner Booth: Rain in the Face

Thursday morning, I went outside into the mist and did something unusual for me. I turned my face up to the tiny raindrops and enjoyed a refreshing little shower.

For nearly 40 years, from ages 13 to 51, I wore glasses, and precipitation of any kind meant I kept my head down. Since laser surgery to correct my vision, I keep finding these little moments of joy that come from not wearing glasses.

Of course, for 20 of those years, I was living in New Mexico, where the precipitation really isn’t the kind you want hitting you in the face.

  • Rain-in-the-Face was a Lakota Sioux war chief who was on the winning side at the Battle of Little Bighorn. If you’re trying to place the name.
  • Something I haven’t mentioned in all my springtime announcements: Redding’s farmers market has opened for the season, offering fresh produce and other goodies. The Shasta Growers Association Certified Farmers Market is in the Civic Center parking lot every Saturday from 7:30 a.m. until noon. For more info, click here.
  • Volunteerism set another record last month at the Shasta County libraries. Volunteer Coordinator Raeanne Gibb reports that 151 volunteers contributed 1,800 hours at the libraries in Redding, Anderson and Burney in March. In 2008, 270 volunteers donated 21,013 hours of service. City officials say it would cost more than $378,000 if those hours were worked by paid employees. The libraries currently have 311 active volunteers.
