It’s always a good idea to check the glass windows and door at Bernie’s Guitar (3086 Bechelli Lane) in Redding before heading in for strings. It jogged my memory about a Sunday’s jazz saxophone concert at Old City Hall featuring Dave Short, Jeff Jones, Mitch Hawley and former Redding resident and wonderful player Roger Hogan. The 7 p.m. show is $10. Look for Hogan to light up this already excellent ensemble.

• Upcoming shows at Bernie’s include songwriter Dennis McGregor on April 17. ALso, what promises to be a very memorable evening is 101-year-old Hawaiian jazz legend Bill Tapia (playing with Bruce Calin on bass and Bernie Baker himself on guitar) on April 24. For more info on those shows, visit the Oaksong Society website.
• Looks like Bombays in Redding is picking up its live music offerings. The Red Elvises (billed as Igor and the Red Elvises) are playing the California Street bar on April 21. A group called Greg Ginn and the Taylor Texas Corrugators plays there April 14.
• A show that I’m real excited about is Dave Gonzalez and the Stone River Boys at LuLu’s on April 19. I’ll always be interested in Gonzalez, of the legendary Paladins and Hacienda Brothers, is doing. What a great guitar player and performer. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door. Tickets are avaliable at Meteor Music (2927 E. Center St.) in Anderson. Call 378-2050. I’ll be trying to reach Dave in the coming days to catch up with him.
• Did you know you can cop the wireless Internet outside the Shasta County Library? That’s what I’m doing right now while listening to the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band and watching some baseball team with a “P” on its uniform play Simpson University at Tiger Field. Simpson lost the second half of a double header 12-6 (I think, it was close to that).
• The Britt Festival lineup is out and it’s a pretty nice lineup. How about Wilco on June 30; Emmylou Harris, Shawn Colvin, Patty Griffin and Buddy Miller on July 3; or The Cowboy Junkies and Son Volt on July 18? Looks like it’s time to get back up to Britt.
