Want to grow your own vegetables? As produce prices continue to rise, planting a garden makes economic sense, and People of Progress wants to help.
The food bank and charitable organization has scheduled a gardening workshop for 6 p.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church social hall. Local experts will give tips on starting a garden, reducing water use, battling pests and selecting the best vegetables for our area. People of Progress urges all gardeners to plant an extra row or two of vegetables to donate to food banks, which are struggling to keep up with demand in these tough times.

- What I’m Reading: Still catching up on pal Ken Bruen’s prodigious output, thanks to recent acquisitions by the library. “Cross” is the latest in his series featuring alcoholic former cop Jack Taylor. I’m knocked out by this bleak, poetic series, which began with “The Guards.” If you want to know about life in modern Ireland, give Bruen’s crime novels a try.
- DVD I Watched on the Treadmill: “Le Professionnel,” starring Jean-Paul Belmondo as a raffish French spy who spends two years in an African prison, then returns to Paris to extract his revenge on those who left him there. I didn’t care for the ending, but, oh, those 1981 hairstyles and fashions!
