My wife set out a couple of buckets on Sunday to catch rainwater for her houseplants. The smaller of the two — it holds about a gallon — is nearly full. Don’t know how many inches of rain that translates into, but I’ve started building an ark.
- Nice event scheduled for Saturday to honor local civil rights leader Isaac Lowe. Mrs. Lowe, 87, who recently made headlines when she attended the Obama inauguration, has been a leader in Redding’s black community since 1946. The Committee to Honor Living Black History will hold a free potluck Saturday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Center. - KIXE-TV is sponsoring a contest for young writers and illustrators. The Reading Rainbow contest is open to kids in kindergarten through third grade, who will each submit an original illustrated story. Prizes for the winners, and a chance to go on to the national competition. Deadline is March 20. More info at www.kixe.org.
- Jill Killian was named Employee of the Month at Mercy Medical Center in Redding. Killian is an assistant at the hospital’s Hospitality House. Congrats!
- They Fired All the Copy Editors, Part XIII: A student in Wichita has made national news by catching an error on the state writing test. Geoffrey Stanford, 17, told his teacher that the test said “omission” when it meant “emission.” The teacher told the Kansas Department of Education, which sent out a correction.
