Citing the economic downturn and decreased home building south of Sacramento, Meek’s Lumber and Hardware has closed its Elk Grove lumber yard.
Company spokesman Scott Kassahn said Friday that the retail center at 10549 E. Stockton Blvd. closed Thursday. A neighboring 20-acre Meek’s distribution center will remain open.
Kassahn said most employees from the Elk Grove store, which opened in 1987, are transferring to three other Meek’s stores that will continue to operate in the region – in Yuba City, Rocklin and Martell.
“We’re not abandoning Sacramento in any way,” Kassahn said. “We’ll continue to serve the Sacramento area through those three stores. … The (Elk Grove) store was a big-volume store and did well in that area during the boom years, but it has been a struggle in the current economic climate.”
