Mistress of the Mix: BEWARE

Posted on July 20, 2018 by Valerie Ing

I can’t even remember the last time I had a decent night’s sleep. It all started back in April, when Olive jumped out of bed in the middle of the night, ran out into the back yard, and let the… Continue Reading →

Posted on June 22, 2018 by Valerie Ing

Looking back on all the summers that I can remember in my life, I can tell you exactly what I was doing and where I was by the music I was listening to. And likewise, when I hear music from… Continue Reading →

Mistress of the Mix: Ray Ray

Posted on June 8, 2018 by Valerie Ing

I’ve made a lot of short speeches to audiences at the Cascade Theatre over the years as Mistress of Ceremonies, but I’m about to make my most important appearance on stage yet this weekend when I deliver the eulogy for… Continue Reading →

Mistress of the Mix: Old School (revised)

Posted on May 25, 2018 by Valerie Ing

To put it mildly, I was kind of a rebel back in the day. I was the kind of kid who liked to march to the beat of my own drum. I just thought I knew what was best for… Continue Reading →

A Mistress of the Mix morsel: My Big Fat Gay Playlist

Posted on May 4, 2018 by Valerie Ing

I’ll be brief. I’m taking you back to probably the year 2005. My eight year old daughter seemed a little confused. She was looking at a photo in my office and said to me, “No mama. That’s not right.” It… Continue Reading →

Mistress of the Mix: DNA Part 2 … The Barn

Posted on April 13, 2018 by Valerie Ing

We sat there, dumbfounded, looking at my husband’s DNA test results. At the top of the list, was a woman who – according to science – is my husband’s first cousin. We didn’t recognize her name. As first cousins, they’d… Continue Reading →

Mistress of the Mix: DNA

Posted on March 23, 2018 by Valerie Ing

I probably shouldn’t be telling you this. Not just because it involves my husband crying some pretty hard tears and spilling family secrets, but because it kind of gives away the ending… the end of the blockbuster movie about my… Continue Reading →

Mistress of the Mix: Who Ya Gonna Call?

Posted on March 9, 2018 by Valerie Ing

These days, when I visit my parents in Southern Oregon, the first thing I say when I walk in the door is, “Where’s that damned cat?” If you didn’t follow my saga of Lint, my dad’s cat, back in January,… Continue Reading →

Mistress of the Mix: Stay You

Posted on January 19, 2018 by Valerie Ing

Today we said farewell to our son. He stood in a room with eight other young men and women, at attention, hands clasped behind their backs, as a man in head to toe camouflage led them in an oath: I… Continue Reading →

  • Comment on Letter to the Editor by Supervisor Allen Long: Don’t divert $10 million in jail funds to risky medical-school partnership by Judy Hanawalt
In reply to Steve Towers. I'll ignore most of your comment to focus on talking about UC Davis opening a medical school here. Even though it was all hearsay, I was exposed to this idea maybe 16-17 years ago. From what I understand, Davis answered "Thanks, but no thanks." That answer makes sense to me; […]

In reply to Flounders. Good to know about parsley. And I am impressed (jealous) about your tarragon returning after winter. You're correct about it doing best in partial shade. It's delicate. (I can't remember where I bought the Mexican tarragon, but it's STURDY and loves full sun.)
  • Comment on 7th Annual Lavender Harvest: Giving back to the community, sharing a love of flowers, farming, family and fun by Doni Chamberlain
In reply to Shelly Shively. Glad you liked the story. And you're right that Gary and Rocio are inspirational. I am looking forward to visiting the Lavender Harvest, and can't wait to plant some lavender at my place.
