Posted on December 30, 2018 by Chic Miller

5:00AM, barely daylight – time to start chores on the farm. As usual, I headed first to my pony barn. From inside, little whinnies softly greeted me. They knew that my approach meant breakfast was about to be served. But… Continue Reading →

All About Animals: Heroes in Our Midst

Posted on December 2, 2018 by Chic Miller

I first met them during the Shasta County Carr Fire. I watched as they made their way down our little winding road, through the thick smoke that had settled over the farm. Silently they came, seemingly out of nowhere. We… Continue Reading →

All About Animals: Backyard Breeders

Posted on October 28, 2018 by Chic Miller

Just who are backyard breeders, you ask? Well, it could be your neighbor, relative, co-worker, or even a close friend. They lurk everywhere. Anyone who feels compelled to breed their family dog (or dogs) is a backyard breeder. Whether they… Continue Reading →

Posted on October 14, 2018 by Chic Miller

We’ve all been there – at the pet store, the swap meet, or watching a TV commercial when we see the cutest, the most adorable, the most beautiful, the just-gotta-have-one of those pets. For some of us, before we act… Continue Reading →

All About Animals: Ticks, Among the Creepiest of the Creepy Crawlers

Posted on September 30, 2018 by Chic Miller

First things first. Let me make myself perfectly clear. I really hate ticks – almost as much as I hate fleas, and I really really hate fleas. Ticks are not just annoying creatures. They are evil, blood-sucking, tenacious, disgusting creepy… Continue Reading →

All About Animals: Pink Ribbons

Posted on September 2, 2018 by Chic Miller

Late July, of course it was hot here in Shasta County. That was to be expected. But it was more than just hot – it was too hot. Temperatures had been soaring well above 100º for several weeks. Everything was… Continue Reading →

All About Animals: Uninvited Summer Guests

Posted on July 22, 2018 by Chic Miller

My main goal in life is to care for and protect the many cuddly critters who reside at Bella Vista Farms. But this summer the farm was visited by a few uninvited, uncuddly, dangerous “guests”. Five to be exact. That’s… Continue Reading →

All About Animals: Honey – A Sweet Solution

Posted on July 8, 2018 by Chic Miller

It must be the color of honey that brings warm thoughts to mind. Just saying the word makes me picture things that are soft and gentle. For instance, my bright yellow singing canaries, Piper, my golden palomino pony, my beloved,… Continue Reading →

All About Animals: Summer Hot Spots

Posted on June 24, 2018 by Chic Miller

Nope, I’m not talking about Jack’s Grill, the Sundial Bridge, or Turtle Bay. I’m referring to a canine skin condition called moist dermatitis, weeping mange, moist eczema, or hot spots, which most commonly occur in hot, humid climates. Hot spots… Continue Reading →

What a wonderful article about a woman I admire so much. A musician, a baker, a mother, grandmother and a healer. I will never forget getting to attend a birthday party for Miss Piggy Sue. I first met Piggy when she was a wee one and watched her blossom and blossom and blossom! Thank you […]

Great lady. I enjoyed her energy and dedication as we served together on the board of the Shasta High Choir Boosters. Great smile, great laugh.

But Kern County has over 1,000 4H-ers, Fresno County has ~750, and Shasta is third with ~675. Statewide there are ~4,100, so ~1/6 California 4H-ers […]
