Here’s an event that combines two of my very favorite things: books and hamburgers.
Next Saturday, locally owned burger joints are contributing their proceeds to the Shasta County Public Libraries. The money will be used to buy new books for the libraries in Redding, Anderson and Burney. The fundraiser runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at a bunch of burger places, including such Redding favorites as Damburger, Bartels and Gene’s. For the full list, click here.
Get out there on Saturday and eat ’em up.
- Curious about Darfur, the African region beset by genocide and famine? You can hear directly from someone who lived there when Mohamed Sulieman speaks to Dr. John Whitmer’s history class at 8 a.m. Friday in Room 809 at Shasta College. The public is invited to the talk by Sulieman, a Sudanese blogger who now lives in the Bay Area.
- Movies We’ve Seen: “The Hurt Locker,” an intense drama about bomb squad teams in Iraq. Powerful film that’s getting only a limited showing, so catch it before it’s gone from the big screen. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, who also directed “Blue Steel” and “Strange Days.”
- Overheard: At a gas station on Cypress Avenue, a flustered mom behind the wheel of a hot rod shouted to an unseen child in the back seat: “Dammit, Summer Rain, you kick my seat one more time and I’m gonna whup your ass!” I’ll bet her brother, Autumn Wind, behaved himself.
