The TEDxRedding team will host TED Talks Under the Stars on Friday, October 16, 2015. The free, outdoor event will feature TED Talks on a large screen, all on the theme: The Power of Place. Each video will be introduced by a local community member who will share why they think the talk contains an “idea worth spreading.”

More than 750 people have RSVP’d already, and attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket or camp chair to enjoy the talks under the stars while lounging on the grass at the north end of the Promenade in downtown Redding. A bike valet will be available for those who plan to bicycle to the event, thanks to Shasta Living Streets.

TED Talks Under the Stars is powered by Catalyst Redding Young Professionals and sponsored by Jefferson Public Radio, which has brought the TED Radio Hour to the North State and broadcasts it every Sunday at 10am and 4pm.

TED is a nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading; the acronym stands for Technology, Entertainment, & Design. The annual TED conference, founded in 1984, brings together some of the world’s most fascinating thinkers and doers. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED created a program called TEDx where x = independently organized. One of very few TEDx teams in the North State, TEDxRedding hosted a similar outdoor event in the downtown Redding Promenade in October of 2011.

They later hosted hosted TEDxRedding: Fill in the Blank at Old City Hall in February 2012 and TEDxRedding: Mapping Connections at the Cascade Theatre in September 2013. A series of smaller salon events followed, with topics ranging from civic innovation to educational innovation to the future of transit at venues from the Shasta Public Libraries in Redding to Trilogy Architecture, Turtle Bay Exploration Park, Vintage Wine Bar & Restaurant, and UPrep.

“Redding is one of those rare communities that can combine the qualities of rural life with the exposure to new ideas that is so much a part of city dwelling,” said Rachel Hatch, the co-curator of TEDxRedding, “We hope that TEDxRedding can in some way be a part of that process.”
