What: “Rafting for Darfur”

When: Sat., Aug. 1. Rafts may be reserved to leave at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m. or noon. 

Where: Rafts leave from the South Bonnyview boat landing and will arrive at the Anderson River Park landing.

Cost: $80 + tax for a six-person raft, or $100 + tax for an eight-person raft. Water cannons may also be rented for $5.

What else: The Barbecue Wagon will be set up at the boat landing. Also, a barbecue lunch, courtesy of Redding Vice Mayor Patrick Jones, will be available at the Anderson River Park landing. All proceeds from rentals and the lunch will be used to build a permanent library/classroom in Camp Kounoungo, a camp for displaced Darfuris located in eastern Chad.

Why: In 2007 Genocide No More-Save Darfur adopted Camp Kounoungo. Since then it has raised and donated thousands of dollars to humanitarian agencies providing aid to Darfuris in “Camp Ko” and other camps. Jared Law, a student at UC, Davis, and former president of Students Against Genocide at Shasta High School, worked with his father, Lance Law, owner of North State Raft Rentals to organize “Rafting for Darfur.”
