Food Drive Today

Summer’s a tough time for area food banks, and the struggling local economy has made it all the worse as a growing number of unemployed residents rely on donated groceries.

Today, at five locations in Shasta County, a coalition of 18 area food banks and charities is accepting donations of non-perishable food to help meet the need. The food drive is part of the 10th annual “Christmas in July” campaign. Take your donations, before 2 p.m., to one of these locations: Mount Shasta Mall in Redding, Wal-Mart or Safeway in Anderson, Holiday Quality Foods in Cottonwood or Sentry Market in Shasta Lake.

Meanwhile, the Christmas in July clothing drive continues at Mount Shasta Mall. Pick up a card and shop for new school clothes for a needy child.

  • An environmental assessment for the communications center on top of Shasta Bally Mountain is now available for public review. The National Park Service at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area will take comments through Aug. 10. The environmental assessment has five alternatives, and the Park Service chose the one that would allow the communications towers to remain and would let other companies install facilities there as well. • Zapped: Sure, Internet addiction exists, and some of us spend way too much time on the computer. But even the Chinese government thought electroshock therapy as a cure for Intenet addiction was going too far. The government closed a clinic that was using the technique. Full story here.
  • What I’m Reading: Really enjoyed Adrian McKinty’s suspense novel “Fifty Grand,” which is about a Cuban policewoman who sneaks into the United States with illegal immigrants to investigate her father’s suspicious death at a Colorado resort. Nice twist at the end. Now reading “Seeking Whom He May Devour” by the French author Fred Vargas.
