When we think of ArtHop, we typically think of the visual arts and the performing arts. But this Saturday, the literary arts get a workout as well.
Our pals at Hot Air Quarterly will read samples of their work at Pacific West Graphics downtown, starting at 7 p.m., following a reception for this month’s Featured Artist, painter Raette Meredith.
Among those reading from their works will be Clark Beek, who circumnavigated the globe in a 40-foot ketch and lived to write about it. Others include Celeste White, Bill Siemer, Jim Dowling, Peter Wright, Larry Greco Harris, Kimberly Carlson and Sorca O’Connor. A question-and-answer session will follow.
- When I first typed the above item, it came out “40-foot kvetch,” which would be a really big complainer.
- Nice break in the weather, eh? After a run of 100-plus days, highs in Redding are forecast to be 90 degrees or less through Thursday. That should make Thursday evening’s MarketFest a lot more bearable. Last week, it was so hot, I was forced to drink several cold beers.
- Mark your calendars for another fun event on Saturday. This month’s Second Saturday family day at Turtle Bay Exploration Park will be a presentation on astronomy and the search for extraterrestial life. Astronomers from the Hat Creek Radio Observatory will make a “searching for little green men” presentation at 1 p.m. The whole event runs from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and is free with regular park admission.
- Sports: Yeah, yeah, Wimbledon, baseball, whatever. Did you see that two of the NBA’s true madmen got traded to championship teams? The reigning champ Lakers picked up Ron Artest from the Houston Rockets, which should make the Lakers even more formidable, assuming Artest truly has grown out of his anger-management problems. And the Boston Celtics signed Rasheed Wallace from the Detroit Pistons. Wallace, the perennial leader in technical fouls, could give the Celts an even better shot at another title run, if he focuses on playing rather than running his mouth. We can only hope for a Celtics-Lakers finals that requires these two to defend each other.
