I’ve run into local musician Dave Palin a couple of times lately, and he’s trying to get the word out about Wednesday night jam sessions at the Old Millhouse Deli on Highway 299 west of Redding.
The jams, which run 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., are open to all. Dave says microphones, drums and several amps are set up, and musicians can plug in and join the music at any time. Participants have shown up with everything from saxophones to mandolins to bagpipes. Very loose, and lots of fun, says Dave. I’m looking forward to stopping by for beer, pizza and music.
- Another favorite lunch spot, Damburger, has started its summer dinner hours. The downtown burger palace is open until 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Starting next week, it’ll also stay open until 8 p.m. on Thursdays to take advantage of Marketfest crowds. Damburger’s patio is a great place to run into friends and neighbors.
- A message to spammers: If you’re trying to fake me into opening your ad by calling me a “valueable customer,” you should really learn to spell “valuable.”
- Mark your calendars for June 26-27, when the Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender community celebrates Pride ’09. NorCalPride.org will sponsor a “Break Bread and Mingle” event at Downtown Eatery from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. June 26, followed by a screening of the film “Ask Not,” which explores the military’s policies toward gays. On June 27, the group will sponsor a food drive at the Lake Redding Boat Ramp from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. People who donate canned food will get free snowcones.
- Tickets are on sale now for the Shasta College Theatre Arts Department’s summer offering, a family-friendly musical of “James and the Giant Peach.” The play, directed by Robert Soffian with choreography by James Santos, shows for four weeks, beginning July 1. Evening performances will be at 7:30 p.m., and there also will be some 2 p.m. matinees. Advance tickets ($10 general, $8 seniors and students, $5 for children 12 and under) are available here.
