Did you see the story about rural militias in Pakistan taking on the Taliban?
I found it heartening that these villagers, enraged over the suicide bombing of a mosque, decided to rid their area of Taliban militants. Evidence once again that most Muslims want no part of the restrictive, backward warrior culture that the Taliban represents.
I was saying this to Kelly and she immediately responded, “Vigilante Pakistanis.” Which would be a tongue-twisting name for a rock band.

- That’s more like it. After the first-game blowout in the NBA Finals, I worried that the series would be lop-sided and boring. But Sunday’s game went to overtime before the Los Angeles Lakers squeaked out a 101-96 victory over the Orlando Magic. The Lakers now lead the series 2-0. Game 3 is Tuesday night in Orlando.
- You always hear about “short-order cooks,” but where are the “tall-order cooks?” Want a special recipe that uses rare ingredients? Why, that’s a tall order. We’ll have to summon the other chef.
- DVDs We’ve Seen: “The Girl on the Bridge,” a French movie from 2000 about a suicidal woman (Vanessa Paradis) who’s rescued by a knife thrower (Daniel Auteil) who needs a target for his show. An amusing fable about luck and fate.
