Corner Booth: Gunday

Weird story of the day: A pastor in Kentucky is urging his flock to bring their guns to church.

On Saturday, June 27, members of New Bethel Church in Louisville will celebrate the Second Amendment by bringing their (unloaded) guns to an “Open Carry Church Service.” A handgun raffle, patriotic music and information on gun safety will be featured as part of the festivities, as the church gets a jump on the Fourth of July.

“We’re just going to celebrate the upcoming theme of the birth of our nation,” pastor Ken Pagano told The Associated Press. “And we’re not ashamed to say that there was a strong belief in God and firearms — without that this country wouldn’t be here.”

Pagano said recent shooting incidents in churches show the need for gun safety education. He said the event was planned months before last Sunday’s slaying of an abortion doctor in a Wichita, KS, church.

What could possibly go wrong?

  • What I’m Reading: No Man’s Dog” by Jon A. Jackson, one in a mystery series featuring Detroit detective “Fang” Mulheisen and former mob troubleshooter Joe Service. This installment features domestic militias, the CIA and Al-Qaeda. A wild ride. Next up: “Out Stealing Horses” by Per Petterson. After that, who knows? “The Cat in the Hat?”
  • Fun with Craigslist: From the “free” section on the Redding Craigslist, we find the following: Free unused and unopened package of weight loss
  • That’s the problem I have with my own package of weight loss — it’s unused. It’s still on the shelf, next to my unopened can of whoop-ass.
