Just when you thought the NBA playoffs couldn’t get any more exciting: With one second on the clock, LeBron James takes an inbounds pass, turns and fires a 23-foot buzzer-beater to lift the Cleveland Cavaliers over the Orlando Magic, 96-95.
I apologize to my neighbors for the noise.
- Happy Memorial Day weekend to all our readers! Hope you have an enjoyable, relaxing time. My sweetie’s out of town, so I’m mostly hanging around the house, writing, reading, listening to blues on the stereo and, of course, watching basketball.
- What I’m Reading: “Blue Heaven” by C.J. Box. This mystery won the Edgar Award for Best Novel last month, and I was delighted to get it from the Redding Library, but I’ve been a little disappointed. The story’s interesting (two North Idaho children on the run after witnessing a murder), but I find the writing to be bulky and occasionally awkward. Maybe it’s just me. I’m in “editing mode” on my latest novel, so I’m on the lookout for unnecessary words. Next up: “Sanctuary” by Ken Bruen, whose writing is so taut, it’s like poetry.
- DVD I Watched on the Dreadmill: “Dirty Deeds,” a wry 2002 crime drama about an Australian gangster (Bryan Brown) who is approached by a weary mobster (John Goodman) about installing American slot machines in all his casinos. Set in the 1960s, with the hilarious fashions of the era. Toni Collette is very good as Brown’s no-nonsense wife.
