The City Council has voted to ban smoking on the grounds of the Redding Library.
The council voted 3-1 on Monday night to extend an existing ban (which required smokers to stay 60 feet from the entrance) to the perimeters of the library property.
Library staff and patrons had requested the ban because of litter and smoke hanging around the entrance. The Shasta Libraries Citizens Advisory Committee (of which I’m a member) had recommended the total ban to the council.
The ban takes effect in July. Library staff will ask smokers to move off the property, but smokers could be cited for a misdemeanor if the police get involved.

Boole’s partner signaled him to open his parachute too late and Boole smacked into a snow-covered mountainside at an estimated 100 mph. He suffered an assortment of injuries, but he’s up and walking around. To read the full story, click here.
- I have friends and relatives who’ve tried skydiving, but I cling to the old adage about never jumping out of a perfectly good airplane.
- Woody Allen, one of my favorite film directors, got a $5 million settlement from American Apparel on Monday. Allen had sued the clothing company for $10 million for using his image without permission. American Apparel had put up billboards showing Allen dressed as a Hasidic Jew in his movie “Annie Hall.” Full story here.
