Jim’s Thursday Picks

You’ve got to be careful when you launch a new feature. You’re pretty much tied to it forever and if your mind goes blank, it doesn’t matter — you still need to fulfill your obligation.

But I’m thinking this one’s going to be pretty easy. I’m setting my parameters about as wide as Texas.

I’m calling it “Jim’s Thursday Picks.” Soon, we’ll have a killer graphic element to go with this feature (this is a cry for help to the great Philbert Fountain), but I thought I’d start with an image of my favorite guitar pick — a purple Fender medium. These things tend to grow all over our house — in the dryer, on the coffee table, on the stereo, in the pockets of most of my clothes. I remember Bernie Baker (of Bernie’s Guitar) telling me a story of how he used the same pick for amazing amount of time — like, over a decade. I can lose 12 of my Fender mediums in an afternoon.

Anyway, my Thursday picks might be anything from a show this weekend, to an album or song download, a film or DVD, a restaurant dish … anything. Like I say, wide parameters.

Today’s picks are upcoming live performances:

• The Dance Project’s new show “Exposed!” at the Cascade Theatre. I’m going Friday night to catch the opener, but there are also two shows on Saturday. James Santos’ troupe is a proven winner.

• The Riverfront Playhouse’s “And Then There Were None.” Riverfront seems to do these kinds of shows well, you’ve got to love Agatha Christie, and it looks like an excellent cast.

• The Traveling Bohemians’ “The Real Story of Little Red Riding Hood.” I love that they’re doing this satirical show later at night — 10 p.m. — at the Downtown Eatery. Plus Dean Williams is in it.

Jake Shimabukuro at the Cascade Theatre. The ukulele sensation blew everyone away last time he played the Cascade. It’s pretty amazing the sounds one young man can get out of a small, four-stringed instrument.

OK, so there are this week’s picks. I hope you enjoyed the feature, because this might be the first and last time you see it. I don’t believe I asked anyone at A News Cafe if I could do it.

Hey, Doni and Kelly, what do you think about the idea of a Jim’s Thursday Picks feature?
