Corner Booth: Obama Dream

For the first time I can recall, President Obama appeared in my dreams.

Last night, I dreamed about visiting a store that sold Rastafarian stuff — tie-dyed T-shirts, flags, decorator items. The store was operated by these Jamaican guys with enormous dreadlock hairdos. While I was there, President Obama stopped by, followed by his entourage, the news media, etc. He shook hands all around, that wonderful wall-to-wall smile on his face, and we were all excited to see him. Then he picked up a dreadlock wig and put it on and sort of danced around the room, entertaining the assembled, who laughed and applauded.

What sparked this dream? I saw footage on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” of the president enjoying a Stevie Wonder concert, and Stevie’s got those weird dreads. Lots of recent news stories focused on the president’s hair turning gray.  Somehow, that melded together in my mind and came out as a dancing Rasta Prez.

Maybe it’s better to avoid a lot of dream analysis. Later in the night I dreamed I was wandering around town while wearing no pants and hoping my shirttails were long enough. Brrr.

  • Radio Day: Our own Doni Greenberg and Kelly Brewer did a great job today, talking about A News Cafe on Jefferson Public Radio. The host kept digging for gossip and controversy about the local newspaper, but the ladies took the high road. (Good thing I wasn’t the one answering those questions!) He also focused too much on bran muffins and not enough on all the news/features/advice/humor/links to national news available here on A News Cafe. But that’s OK. He mentioned the name of the website about a hundred times. Yay!
  • Shoeless: We give to lots of different charities and attend lots of benefits, but here’s one you won’t see Big Steve participating in: the “MEN Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event on April 4. It’s part of an international event in which men walk a mile in high heels to raise awareness of rape and raise money for anti-violence organizations like Shasta Women’s Refuge. These are great causes, and I’ll gladly write a check, but I’ve got really bad basketball ankles and wouldn’t last 10 yards on high heels. I can barely walk around in regular shoes. Should be fun to watch other men, including Police Chief Peter Hansen, giving it a try. The event starts at 10 a.m. April 4 at the north end of the Downtown Mall.
  • Mark Your Calendar: The Friends of the Library’s bi-monthly sale of used books is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 28, on the Redding Library patio. Paperbacks sell for 25 cents and hardbacks sell for 50 cents. Best deal in town.
