If you or your kids are whizzes with building blocks, you’ll want to enter Saturday’s Legos contest at Turtle Bay Exploration Park. The winner gets a trip to Legoland in Southern California.
Contestants will bring their own Legos to Turtle Bay and be given a three-foot workspace in which to create their masterpieces. All the assembly has to be done on-site between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., when judging begins. Awards in four different age categories will be handed out at 3 p.m. Grand prize is overnight accommodation and tickets to Legoland. For contest details, click here.
The Legos contest is pegged to the Turtle Bay continuing exhibit, “The Art of the Brick,” with its amazing artworks made entirely of the plastic bricks.
And I thought Legos were only good for stepping on barefoot in the dark . . .
- Also on Saturday, volunteers should turn out at 9 a.m. at South City Park to plant trees. Bring shovels and other digging tools to help plant 14 new trees in the park. The effort will be overseen by arborist Rico Montenegro, who also will lead a presentation on good tree selection and maintenance at 1 p.m. at the community room in City Hall. For more info, call Rico at 515-7657.
- Despite a miserable little cold, I had a good time on Saturday at the Authors Fair put on by Writers Forum. Thanks to everyone who stopped by the mall to visit, and I hope I didn’t give you a virus. The leaders of Writers Forum, especially Carol Giaccomucci and George Winship, deserve a hand for all their hard work putting together the event.
- Monday Morning QB: Huge game tonight between the defending champion Pittsburgh Steelers and the surprisingly strong Denver Broncos. No big surprises on Sunday. Indianapolis and New Orleans both struggled, but remain unbeaten. Niners lost to the lowly Titans, and must recover in time to face the Bears on Thursday. The Raiders found a way not to lose by having the weekend off.
- Holy Guacamole: Me, reading a headline: “Hey, a big rig full of avocados flipped over here in town.”
The birthday girl: “What are we waiting for? Let’s go!”
Me: “It happened last night. I think they’ve got them all cleaned up by now.”
Her: “Awwww.”
