Something Fishy Going On

The big fish are back! This Saturday, the 19th annual Return of the Salmon Festival comes to Coleman National Fish Hatchery, and events are scheduled for the whole day.

Besides views of the great leaping salmon and the hatchery operations, the festival will include information booths, an aquarium, children’s activities and displays of sporting equipment. A salmon bake is planned for 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. , sponsored by the Anderson Rotary.

As in years past, a free shuttle will take visitors from the parking lot of the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Anderson to the hatchery.

  • Think Pink: Here’s a fun benefit TODAY at Chop Chix Salon at 2051 Hilltop Dr. For a minimum donation of $10, walk-in customers can get a haircut, “pink rock star toes,” pink streak, eyebrow wax or chair massage. All proceeds go to Breast Cancer Awareness. For more, call 224-9900. I had “pink rock star toes” once. In a cream sauce.
  • The big storm front that brought rain and damaging winds to Northern California is pushing out of the area, but we’ve got one more gray, wet day before we get a break. Friday should be sunny, but there will be a chance of showers through the weekend when I’ll be indoors, watching football, anyway. Hah.
  • Mark Your Calendar for Oct. 23, when Shasta College will present its Fall Forum featuring a screening of the film “Belonging,” which is described as “a scientific and spiritual journey into humanity’s footprint on the Earth.” Filmmaker Gerard Ungerman will be on hand to answer questions. The FREE presentation will be at room 802 of the main campus. For more info, call 242-2248.
  • How do you plan to spend Halloween? The congregation at Amazing Grace Baptist Church in Canton, NC, has big plans — a Halloween book-burning! In particular, the church is burning all translations of the Bible except the King James Version because it’s the only one that is “God’s Word.” (Just FYI: The KJV was first published in 1611.) Also, they’re burning all “Satanic music,” including Christian pop, and books by “heretics” such as Mother Teresa. They’ll also be serving BBQ chicken and fried chicken “with all the sides.” For more, click here.
