Shasta College To Hold 74th Commencement Ceremony

Shasta College will hold its 74th Commencement ceremony at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 17, 2024, in the Shasta College Memorial Stadium. A total of 1543 degree applications, including 339 certificate applications, have been received. Among the graduates are 331 Transfer degree recipients, 427 Honors graduates, and 14 Bachelor of Science recipients. In addition to these awards, the Health Sciences Division will graduate 58 Associate Degree for Nursing (ADN) students, 16 students in the Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program, 12 certificate completers in the Vocational Nursing (VN) program, and 9 Dental Hygiene students. A total of 24 veterans will be graduating during this commencement.

Abigail Hellman, Vice President of the Shasta College Student Senate, will present the class, while Dr. Kevin O’Rorke, Interim Superintendent/President, will deliver the welcoming address. Flag bearers for the ceremony will include Pamela Neronha, Excellent Educator of the Year; Lorelei Hartzler, Classified Employee of the Year; and Alexa Zaharris, Administrator of the Year.

This year’s commencement speaker will be Redding Police Chief Captain Brian Barner. Captain Barner joined the Redding Police Department in 1992 as a Police Explorer before becoming a Police Cadet in 1994. He was hired as a Police Recruit in 1997. A native of Redding, Captain Barner attended Saint Joseph’s School and graduated from Shasta High School in 1994. He studied Administration of Justice at Shasta College while working as a Police Cadet. Captain Barner holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice administration from Southern Oregon University and a master’s degree in public administration from National University. He has been married to his wife, Alysha, for 22 years, and they have two sons, aged 15 and 19.

In addition to the commencement ceremony, the Associate Degree in Nursing students will hold a special pinning ceremony on Wednesday, May 15, at 5:00 p.m. in the Shasta College Theatre for the ADN students. The Shasta College Fire Academy will also hold a special ceremony for their graduating cadets on Saturday, May 18, starting at noon in the Shasta College Theatre.

The staff, faculty, and Board of Trustees of Shasta College extend heartfelt congratulations to all graduates and certificate recipients for their outstanding educational achievements.
