Shasta College Art Gallery Show and Discussion

The Record Cover Art Exhibition at Shasta College reflects examples from 80 years of album jackets. This free exhibition will run from August 15 to September 22, 2022, in the Shasta College Art Gallery. On Thursday, September 1, from 1:30 p.m.- 2:30 p.m., Meteor Music record store owner, Rockin’ Ron Sullivan, and Shasta College Art Instructor David Gentry will talk about record cover art, rare albums, and record collecting in room 400 on the Redding campus. A reception will follow in the Shasta College Art Gallery from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

This exhibition showcases select records by recognized artists, unique designs by graphic designers, and the musician’s direct influence on the cover. The graphic artists chosen to create covers for the musicians often popularized innovative visual ideas and designs. Works dating back to the 1940s often gave no credit to the creator of the record cover design and frequently used iconographic imagery to illustrate the record content. Many of the record covers are iconic and synonymous with the ideologies of their time. Genres of music and record designs from the 1980s to the present often reflect similar concepts of the past decades on display. The popular trends in design, contemporary thought, creativity, aesthetics and cultural movements are often reflected through record cover art.

Gallery hours are Mondays and Wednesdays 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m., and Fridays 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
