Redding Man Arrested in Hit and Run on Hilltop Drive

On Wednesday June 10th, 2020 at 3:30 P.M. Redding Police Officers responded to the 200 block of Hilltop Drive to investigate a hit and run traffic collision. The investigation revealed a white van was traveling north on Hilltop Drive while a black Ford F150 was traveling southbound. The driver of the truck made a left turn and the truck struck the van head on disabling both vehicles. The driver of the truck fled the scene of the collision of foot. The driver and passenger of the van sustained lacerations and the driver was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Officers began a search for the driver and summoned aid from the California Highway Patrol Northern Division Air Operations. Together, CHP and RPD were able to locate a subject matching the description provided by witnesses. Officers contacted Hal Kimberly Sutherland, 33 years of Redding. Sutherland was several blocks away from the collision and had changed his clothes to disguise his appearance.

Sutherland admitted to driving the Ford F150 at the time of the collision. Officer evaluated Sutherland and determined he was under the influence of a combination of illegal drugs. Officers arrested Sutherland for driving under the influence causing injury, fleeing the scene of a collision and violating the terms of his Post Release Community Supervision. Officers booked Sutherland into the Shasta County Jail.
