North State Symphony (NSS) kicks off its 2019-20 Masterworks series with “Beethoven Triple” on September 28th in Redding and September 29th in Chico, a concert featuring Beethoven’s rarely-performed Triple Concerto for piano, violin and cello.
The monumental Triple Concerto features NSS visiting guest artist favorites of the past four years including Dianna Anderson (piano), Andrew Sords (violin) and Erik Anderson (cello). Writing for three soloists alongside a full orchestra was unprecedented in Beethoven’s time and the compositional challenges resulted in a work that reflects a unique and fresh perspective of his genius.
“I can’t wait to begin our 19th season and get back into sharing music with our listeners,” says Scott Seaton, Music Director and Conductor of North State Symphony. “Throughout this season and through the powerfully uplifting, all-encompassing music of Beethoven, we are reminded of the strength of community and – especially during times of unexpected challenges – that we are better together.”
Framing the Triple Concerto for this program are Michael Torke’s Ash, a work that pays homage to Beethoven with rhythmic, feisty shards of melody in search of a theme; and Franz Schubert’s Third Symphony – transparent, full of fresh melodic invention, and a true example of classical elegance and flair.
Performances are Saturday, September 28th at 7:30pm at the Cascade Theatre in Redding, CA (tickets at the Cascade Theatre Box Office or cascadetheatre.org) and Sunday, September 29th at 2pm at Laxson Auditorium in Chico, CA (tickets at the University Box Office or at chicostatetickets.com). A free pre-concert talk begins one hour before the performances.
A mini Season Ticket package for the remaining three Masterworks series concerts will be available for sale at the box office during intermission, and in person, by phone or mail following the performance.
