Shasta College Native American Heritage Month Celebration

Fish-Weir Across Trinity River--Hupa

Native American Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, histories, and contributions of Native people. The community is welcomed to join us for any of several Native American Heritage Month events on the Shasta College main campus in Redding.

The Office of Student Equity and Inclusion is hosting a Celebration of Native American Contributions to Education on November 15, 2017 in the 2000 building on the Student Center stage (where the dining hall is located). The celebration will include music, interactive games, drumming, and a panel of students and community members who will be discussing resistance, resilience, and re-evolution through education. Come anytime between 1 to 4 p.m. Fry bread will be available for sale during the event and Indian Tacos will be for sale in the cafeteria. Contact us for a detailed schedule of events.

November 15, 2017 is also Rock Your Mocs Day. All are invited to respectfully wear your moccasins around campus to celebrate and recognize the similarities between indigenous people and show your appreciation for Native American culture.

On November 30, 2017 in Room 802 from 4 to 7 pm, there will be a screening of the film Beyond Standing Rock, a 2017, hour long documentary, that describes the Dakota Access pipeline protest in historical context. Community members who participated in the Standing Rock demonstrations will be present to answer questions and share insights.

All events are free and open to the public. This event is sponsored by the Office of Student Equity and Inclusion. For further information, contact Ramona at (530) 242-7618 or by emailing equity@shastacollege.edu
