Mercy Maternity Center Hit by DUI Driver in Reverse

On October 7, 2017, at 9:07 PM, officers from the Redding Police Department responded to a report of an alarm at the Mercy Maternity Center at 1900 Railroad Avenue. When they arrived, they located damage to the north side of the building and a witness reported a vehicle had driven into the side of the building and left. A Nissan Pathfinder was located at a residence in the 1700 block of Oregon Street with damage consistent with a traffic collision.

Officers contacted the occupants of the residence and a witness identified Walter Leon Davall, age 44, of Redding, as the driver at the time of the collision. Davall was interviewed and admitted to driving at the time of the collision.

Davall told officers he had been arguing with his wife and had been drinking. He got into the Nissan and drove in reverse from his residence, through the intersection with Sacramento Street, across South Street and into the building. He then drove back to his residence and went inside.

Davall was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision and did not receive any injuries. He was evaluated and arrested for driving under the influence, driving with a blood alcohol level above a .08%, and hit and run. He was transported to Shasta Regional Medical Center for a precautionary medical clearance and booked into the Shasta County jail.

Funding for the dedicated DUI Specialist position is provided to the Redding Police Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
