Shasta College Vocal Institute Concert of Opera Scenes

Morguefile-music

The Shasta College Vocal Institute will be presenting a concert of opera scenes and arias on Thursday evening, August 11, at 7:00 p.m. in the Shasta College theater.  The concert is the final presentation of the Vocal Institute, a three-week intensive training program for high school and college age singers and actors. The Institute brings together former students of the college who have gone on to achieve success in the world of vocal music with the next generation of serious students. This year the Institute staff has included former Shasta College student Nicole Woodward, a graduate of the prestigious San Francisco Opera Merola Program.

The concert is open to the public and will feature scenes from four operas. Two of the operas are by American composers: “Susannah” by Carlisle Floyd and “The Ballad of Baby Doe” by Douglas Moore. The other scenes are from Bizet’s “The Pearl Fishers” and Offenbach’s “The Tales of Hoffmann.”  The evening will close with a revue of some wonderfully comic pieces from the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, “The Mikado.” All will be under the baton of Robert Waterbury, Director of the Vocal Institute. Tickets are available in advance through the college website at www.shastacollege.edu/theatre, or at the door for $8.00 general admission, and $6.00 for students and seniors.

For further information, please contact Dr. Elizabeth Waterbury, Director of Choral Programs, at 530-242-2367.
