Hundreds of Volunteers To Attend 10th Annual Community Creek Clean-Up Oct. 3

Community Creek Clean Up 2015

The public is invited to the 10th Annual Community Creek Clean-Up.

This year’s event is more River Trail clearance to continue the work of the past several sessions, and will take place along the North Sacramento River Trail from Carter Creek at Lake Redding Drive to near the end of Harlan Drive.

The event is Sat. Oct. 3 from 8 a.m. until noon.

Volunteers are asked to wear long pants, closed-toed shoes or boots, and to bring hand tools like pruning shears and loppers, and come expecting to have a fun time working with about 500 others.

During these four short hours, hundreds of volunteers will gather to help clear the trash left on the trail and remove Himalayan Blackberry, Ailanthus, Pyracantha, Fruiting Mulberry, Mimosa, Acacia, Black Locust and Arundo.

Feeding six industrial chippers requires people who want to help.

This year, the Shasta Trinity Fly Fishers will lead a river-based clean-up effort. Volunteers with jet boats will be on the water retrieving debris from areas not accessible by land.

Bring your water bottle, wear closed toe shoes, long pants, plenty of sunscreen, and come out and help restore the riparian savannah along the Sacramento River Trail. You can make a substantial contribution in the heart of Redding during a single morning of labor involving hundreds of your fellow citizens.

Event organizers will have extra gloves, safety goggles, buckets and garden tools available for use.

All volunteers will be treated to a Dutch Bros beverage at the conclusion of the event, courtesy of the Shasta Association of Realtors.

The ultimate goal is to recover the majestic views and access of the Sacramento River not seen in more than 50 years.

The river is 70 feet from the asphalt and cannot be seen or approached.  It is long passed time for the community to regain this public ground.

Also, this section of riparian recovery contains a rare appearance of Rhododenron occidentale, native azalea.  All plant-lovers will want to come and learn where this beauty is located so that they can experience the miracle of its springtime glory.
